Jack Cole on Gene Kelly

“I tried in one or two instances, to stage some things that wouldn’t be typically Gene Kelly. I wanted Gene to take on a more sophisticated, less bravura look. After all, on paper, the film was the essence of chic. But I knew it wouldn’t be any good. The thing about Gene is that he is far more interested in the staging of a number than in the actual dancing of it and that, I guess, is where we are different and wrong for each other.” — Jack Cole, choreographer on Les Girls (1957)
