Gene Kelly Awards 2012 and Broadway or Bust

The 2012 Gene Kelly Awards were held last night in Kelly’s hometown of Pittsburgh.

The event, which you can read more about here, celebrates and honors outstanding performances and productions of high-school musical theatre. Think Glee, but arguably better and with fewer melodramatic plots revolving around student-teacher hookups, texting while driving, and teen marriage. (Er, we hope that’s the case anyway.)

The winner this year is Avonworth High School who staged a production of Sweeney Todd (above), a dark, bloody, and unsettling musical with rather difficult music/lyrics by Stephen Sondheim.

After the awards, PBS announced its upcoming documentary Broadway or Bust, which “follows some of the 60 high school student performers from 30 regional musical theater competitions [...] as they progress to New York City to compete in the National High School Musical Theatre Awards program.” The Gene Kelly Awards will be featured in the project, scheduled to air in September 2012.

The rest of the 2012 Gene Kelly Award winners may be found on the Pittsburgh Post Gazette.

And here, a few attendees live-tweeted their experience at the awards:
