Get Thyself to Glasgow, STAT!

First, BFI Southbank offered a musical festival featuring various MGM musicals. Now, the 2012 Glasgow Film Festival will celebrate Gene’s Centennial with “Gene Kelly: Strictly Song and Dance.” Nine days of Gene Kelly films!

  • Singin’ in the Rain
  • An American in Paris
  • Take Me Out to the Ballgame
  • Brigadoon
  • Hello Dolly
  • On the Town
  • Anchors Aweigh
  • The Pirate (pole-dancing! Daisy dukes!)

I’m just hoping — wishing and hoping — that this spread comes to the U.S.!

News, videos, and commentary devoted to the dancer, choreographer, director extraordinaire.

S’wonderful, is it not?! My hometown is the perfect UK city to honour the great man in this way: Gene has visited Glasgow; the city has a strong heritage of Irish immigrants; and during Hollywood’s Golden Age we had more cinemas per square mile than any other city in Europe – the last point has only a tenuous link to Gene, I grant you, but it’s too good to leave out.

The choice of films is perfect (no place for Summer Schlock in the old town) and for years I have been looking for something to justify, and make amends for, the existence of ‘Brigadoon’ and a ceilidh should just about nullify all that repressed resentment. No English people, please – Celts only. 😉

    Roll on February.

    • Just HAD to get in a Summer Stock dig, didn’t you????? 🙂

@Marc: I’m not hatin’; I think it’s s’wonderful for Glasgow to be honouring Gene with this film festival. How cool would it be for this film festival to come to the US in 2012 for Gene’s centennial, like on Broadway where it all started! @ Patricia Ward Kelly. (I’m sorry but I just couldn’t resist!) I guess I had better pack my bags and hang out in Scotland to get my fix because I don’t see it happening here!
