Gene Kelly and Shakespeare

In her post “Postcards: Wishing You Were Here,” Barbara ponders over the work of “two excellent dancers: Gene Kelly and Jean Butler.”

Barbara apparently “fell in love with Gene Kelly’s work when [she] was about twelve years old and, during [her] husband’s naval career, [she] thought of Kelly’s dancing whenever [she] heard ‘Anchors Aweigh'” Amid her musings, Barbara also writes this lovely line the dancers under consideration:

“To me they are to dance what William Shakespeare is to literature.”

As a Shakespeare professor and an avid fan of Gene Kelly, I certainly can’t argue with that.
